Sister Fidelma is having a crisis of vocation, though not faith, in this latest entry to the long running series set in 670 CE Ireland.  Fidelma, a religious woman and advocate of law has the opportunity to serve her brother, the King of Muman, as an investigating magistrate.  This position would mean she would give up the security and serenity of her life in the Abbey, and also her husband, Brother Eadulf, who has been her dearest confidant and companion for many years.

Before Fidelma is able to reach a decision, the Abbot of the Abbey, Lios Mor, calls on her to investigate the death of Brother Donnchard who was murdered in his locked cell. Donnchad had just returned from the Holy Land and was said to be in possession of, and believed in, a document that would refute the dogma of their religion’s teaching.

Fidelma is faithful in her quest for the truth and to her religious convictions.  Even as she wrestles with the possibilities of taking a more secular place in the world, she is met with feelings of uncertainty about her choices.  She is a very intelligent woman, well versed in both her faith and the law.  Her husband is, above all, loyal to his wife, and tries to support her, even as she faces decisions he wishes she wouldn’t make.

A touch of the traditional mystery enters in with this ancient locked room puzzle, providing a complicated murder with many motives with long-reaching implications for Fidelma to solve.  This is not a mystery to read quickly as there is much depth and many layers of history to unfold and a rich plot and setting to savor.  Whichever decision Fidelma reaches, fans of the series can be confident that this enjoyable heroine will find more murder and mysteries in which to get involved
