Breaking and entering is not in the list of services performed by Nina Quinn’s landscaping company, Taken by Surprise, yet that is exactly what she finds herself doing as she tries to locate missing employee Kit Pipe.

Kit is missing, his car found at ex-girlfriend, holistic therapist Daisy’s house, cell phone and blood on the front seat. Daisy is also missing, so what’s a girl to do? Break into the house, of course. Once inside, Nina finds a secret room and Daisy dead inside, all her medicinal marijuana plants missing, but a few odd looking pills around Daisy’s body.

An ex-cop’s wife, Nina calls the police knowing they won’t be thrilled she broke and entered, but feeling justified since she found Daisy. Of course now Kit is the main suspect in her death, but Nina, who has complete faith in her employee, thinks he may have been the victim of foul play as well and proceeds to investigate. It’s just before Thanksgiving, though, and Nina has agreed to host a dinner for her friends and family, along with new boyfriend Bobby’s nearest and dearest and she hasn’t a thing to eat in the house. Nor is there a turkey to be found in the supermarket.

There are, however, two wild turkeys running around the neighborhood, now if Nina could just catch one, she might be in business. To add to all the confusion, her ex-husband, Kevin, recovering from injuries, has taken up residency on her couch. Kevin’s son Reilly has been living with Nina as of late, and the three of them under one roof may be more than Nina can stand, especially with hunky Bobby living right across the street.

Fast-paced and whacky, Weeding Out Trouble is a fun mystery, though there are so many characters at times it is hard to keep track of them all. Pals Perry and “Brickhouse” are Nina’s co-investigators this time out, driving Nina through the early snow-covered roads of Ohio. Nina is also concerned about some of teenage Reilly’s recent behaviors and that plight of some of the older neighbors who are having a hard time making ends meet.

There is a lot going on in this mystery and when the solution is revealed the seriousness of it may be surprising, though an early on clue leads readers in the right direction. A quick read, Weeding Out Trouble is a fun mystery that will have readers wishing for one of Nina’s surprise garden makeovers, only without the bodies.
