| After many years away from a tragedy that overshadowed her childhood, Olivia Limoges returns to Oyster Bay, North Carolina, where she is the subject of public scrutiny as she tries to keep to herself, living life quietly with her standard poodle Captain Haviland.
Olivia has a secret desire – she is writing a historical novel. One day while at Grumpy’s Diner, she overhears the Backside Bay Writers meeting in a cramped booth at the Andrew Lloyd Weber themed restaurant. Realizing that the locals think she is rude and curmudgeonly, and charmed by group member Camden Ford, Olivia makes tentative steps to join the group. She soon realizes that many people will like her, given the chance, and no one will question her too closely about her past, unless she wants to talk about it.
In a burst of generosity, Olivia transforms the caretaker’s cottage, near the lighthouse her family owns, into the perfect retreat for the writers. Before she can get too ensconced in the group, Camden is found dead with a strange haiku left near his body. Camden’s book was going to be a tell-all about the wealthy Blake Talbot and his family, who are planning to develop Oyster Bay and make it a destination location.
Olivia is sure that Camden’s proposed book must have something to do with his death, When a second body is found, again with another haiku, Olivia steps up her investigation, hoping to make what she considers her town safe once again.
A Killer Plot is a charming first mystery with some great characters. Although the change in Olivia, from a perceived miserly woman to a generous, neighborly friend to all, is rather abrupt, it is very believable. Captain Haviland makes a great sidekick to Olivia, who, though she doesn’t want to admit it, may need human companions, too. The rest of the writers group is diverse and interesting, each with something to offer, and diner waitress Dixie, who prefers “dwarf” to “little person” is feisty enough for everyone.
As Olivia investigates Camden’s death, the town is introduced to readers, the B&B owners, the new bookstore owner, making the town feel cozy and comfortable. Even with the change in her manner, Olivia is still a little unsure of herself, but is working hard to be a welcomed member in Oyster Bay. There are several good suspects and the real murderer stays fairly hidden in plain sight, leaving a surprise ending. A tightly-plotted mystery, an enjoyable cast or characters, a charming heroine and warm setting make A Killer Plot a welcome start to a new series.
