Maggie O’Neill is still nursing her broken leg and moved in with boyfriend Marcus to have him take care of her. She learns that he is putting off returning to college to care for her and decides it is time to find a ground floor apartment of her own.  Maggie’s upstairs neighbor Steff is moving away with fiancé Dr. Dan once his residency is over, so Maggie decides it is a good time to make some living changes.

Marcus’s uncle Lou takes her to a newly renovated apartment complex managed by his lodge mate Robert Locke who offers Maggie a deal too good to refuse. Maggie does have some reservations, as she witnesses Locke and one of his tenant’s boyfriends have a loud argument  over the terms of the lease and she is run down by a teenage girl hiding in the closet of her prospective apartment.

When Maggie returns to sign the lease, she finds Locke floating face down in the complex’s new pool and finds a crushed flash drive that her ex-boyfriend and police investigator Tom unwillingly turns over to computer genius Marcus to recover the information that may be contained on the flash drive.

What Marcus finds is very disturbing and sheds a whole new light on the goings-on at the apartment complex and provides not only a motive for murder, but many suspects.  Maggie’s witchy instincts kick in; in the end, it is some old fashioned sleuthing that uncovers a very surprising suspect with a surprising secret.

Still charming as ever, Maggie relies more on her human instincts and smarts this time than her witchcraft talents. She and Marcus are bringing their relationship into focus and possibly taking it in a new direction, to new levels.  Maggie also makes some independent choices, allowing her to be more sure about the decisions she makes where Marcus is concerned.  The girls at the shop Enchantments where Maggie works, owner Liss and high-schooler Tara, help bring Maggie and Marcus’s investigation into focus.  The mystery takes has a more serious tone than the previous murders Maggie has solved and provides some unexpected  twists and turns.
