Deliver Us From Evil

Shaw (last name only) works for an agency that does not really exist, completing assignments around the world which no one knows he's done. His latest – track down Evan Waller who is involved in human trafficking.

Regina Campion works for a different unnamed agency that secretly tracks down and assassinates evil human beings like the 96 year old Nazi in the opening vignette. Regina is also tasked to kill Waller whose real name is Fedir Kuchin and who previously was a Russian mass murderer. Kuchin escaped to Canada and is now involved in drugs, guns, and human trafficking. Campion's group is under the leadership of Professor Mallory with headquarters in an old castle just outside London in the town of Harrowsfield.

Waller, the incarnate of evil, relives his past atrocities in a safe-room in his 10,000 sq. ft Montreal apartment dressed in his KGB uniform watching black and white movies of the events.  The title refers to the Lord's Prayer which Waller's French mother recited to him each night. At age 63, Waller wants to find something particularly worthy (a nuclear bomb?) to insure his evil legacy.

Deliver Us From Evil is a true sequel to The Whole Truth with many of the same characters including Shaw and Katie James, the reformed alcoholic and award-winning journalist who helped Shaw after the death of his girlfriend Anna.  Although possible to read as a standalone novel, the reader would be much more aware of the backstory which is essential to Shaw's personality and actions.

David Baldacci has written another fast-paced international thriller with much of the action taking place in beautiful and scenic Provence, France. His descriptions of the countryside of France are enticing. The novel is written in a clear and concise fashion. However, if you are faint of heart, Deliver Us From Evil is probably not for you. There are a multiplicity of scenes filled with graphic torture to illustrate the pure evil of Evan Waller.

Deliver Us From Evil comes with both a recommendation and a warning label.
