Yikes!!!! Send your children to the grandparents and your significant other on vacation and settle in for a great read. Combining an original villain, a sub-plot which includes the murder of the protagonist's mother, and snippets of White House and presidential history, David Baldacci has written a compelling political thriller.

Michelle Maxwell and Sean King, former Secret Service Agents, arrive at the First Lady's sister-in-law's house in response to an unknown request only to find her murdered and her daughter kidnapped. Strangely enough, there is blood missing from the murder victim. Sean and the First Lady, Jane Cox, met when President Cox was a Senator and Sean extricated him from a most delicate situation. They meet again at the White House where Jane asks for their help in finding her niece to avoid political involvement. Are there secrets from the past which if now revealed will change the course of the upcoming election?

Sam Quarry, Vietnam Veteran pilot and owner of a 200 year old plantation in Alabama also has his son and two friends kidnap another person and extracts some blood from her as well. Sam is holding both his captives in an old mine shaft  in a secluded mountain area which can only be reached by plane. Sam, who still grieves for his wife who died a year previously and his daughter who has been on life support for many years, is most kind to his captives and his reasons for the kidnapping are not revealed until the denouement. What is the connection between the two kidnapped people?

In the midst of their investigation, Michelle learns that her mother has died and she and Sean fly to Nashville. After discovering her mother was murdered, Michelle must relive parts of her childhood which have haunted her enough that she has been seeing a psychiatrist and undergoing hypnotism. Could her father, a former policeman, have been involved?

Readers will find First Family full of politics and intriguing scandals that will keep them hooked from page one to its rather implausible but satisfying ending. Yes, there is a lot going on in First Family and all of it is good. Did you know that Eisenhower named Camp David after his grandson or that Warren Harding's wife was suspected in his untimely death? There is some interesting White House history to be learned. First Family will answer some intriguing questions. One question does not need answered, this is a great read.
