Boston Episcopalian priest Lily Connor already pushes the bounds of conventional thinking for some people in her traditional New England town. Now she is on an ecumenical council discussing the anti-Semitism feeling of the Christian Church, and even the community. Before an interfaith service, Lily finds the altar defiled in a most cruel way and then her friend Anna, a Polish Catholic who hid Jews during the Holocaust, disappears.
Lily finds her faith shaken as she approaches the holiest time of year in the Church, the Easter triduum, as she searches for Anna. Her search takes her to a religious enclave, The Followers, which she suspects may be more of a cult that professes and teaches evil, rather than a simple, holy life.
Lily must unravel a story that is many decades old in order to attempt to save her friend's life. Along with her mentor Charlie, and budding love interest Tom, she sets out on a journey to uncover the truth, a journey that can only end in one way - death.
Earth has No Sorrows is both an emotionally gripping novel and a tensely written mystery. Lily Connor is a complex character, trying to be many things at once - a respected priest, a trusted confidant and confessor, a community leader, and most importantly, a caring, feeling woman. Lily's deep caring for everyone she encounters, coupled with her spiritual convictions make her a very intense and interesting character. The journey Lily embarks on begins with her quest to find Anna and possibly learn who defiled the altar. It turns into a quest for the truth, a truth she's not sure she will recognize, but a trip readers will willingly make with her.
Set against the solemnity and joy of the Easter season, the unspeakable crimes are juxtaposed against the hope Anna's story gives. Earth has No Sorrows is a tightly written odyssey full of complex characters will leave readers anxious for more about Lily and her ministry in this fledgling series.
