A man walks into a restaurant that has just been the scene of a massacre and acts like a cop and as if he belongs - and he is treated as if he does. Giovanni “Boomer” Frontieri, former NYPD, is now part of a vigilante group known as the Apaches, three former cops who seek their own justice.    The Apaches have the know-how and connections of cops, but not the restrictions of the law and procedures of investigation.  They always exact their own justice, even if they have to stay one step ahead of the law themselves.

Boomer’s niece lies dead in the restaurant, an innocent waitress, collateral damage in what was most likely a hit.  Boomer and his posse begin investigating the hit, joined by a retired police dog with the unlikely name of Buttercup, and HIV police recruit and an Hispanic female cop who has been wounded, each with their own specialty.  Their investigation leads them to a Colombian drug cartel responsible for a good deal of coke being sold in the United States.  In true vigilante fashion, the Apaches will stop at nothing, including their own lives, to get the justice they seek.

A fast-paced, non-stop thriller, Chasers relies on several coincidences and asks readers to suspend their disbelief often, starting in the first scene when Boomer walks in like he owns the investigation and no one questions him.  The premise of these former ex-cops being able to go anywhere, do anything and get away with everything runs thin in a couple of places. There is never any doubt that the Apaches will get their men, how they are going to go about it is a different story.

Carcaterra has built up a steady following starting with his earlier non-fiction and his first book, Apaches, introducing the gang of three.  Readers looking for a quick read full of action will find plenty here, but try as they might, it will be hard to get a good read on any of the characters, especially the new Apaches.
