Twins Bernie and Libby Simmons are catering their fifth murder party, this time at a haunted house extravaganza in the old Peabody School. The school went belly up after the suspicious death of Bessie Osgood, ruled a suicide, but entrepreneur Mark Kane has purchased and refurbished the building.  During a pre-festivities tour Bernie and Libby witness a head rolling toward them and realize it is Amethyst Applegate, who was Bessie Osgood’s roommate.

Amethyst has never been anyone’s favorite and there are plenty of people who would be glad to see her dead, but very few people had the opportunity to decapitate her and leave her in the haunted house. With Halloween just around the corner, and brothers Curtis and Konrad recent graduates from Ghostbusters U., being certain they have Bessie’s ghost on tape, there is plenty of woo-woo, albeit a little whacky, to go around.

With the help of Libby and Bernie’s father, a disabled former cop, the quartet explores the possibility of a ghost creating havoc or more likely, try to uncover whose anger toward Amethyst finally manifested itself in murder.

A Catered Halloween is a fun, quick seasonal read, especially for those who enjoy all things pumpkin. There are plenty of recipes to enjoy, and ghosts and goblins galore. Libby, who takes the lead in the business, is the vaguer of twins while Bernie is the more vivacious, but neither seems very real. The mystery is fun, the history easy to follow along with, though the ages of Bessie and Amethyst is hard to tell, making it hard to put the history of the school in context. Sometimes the woo-woo gets weird-weird, but overall, some good clean Halloween fun.
