The Honourable Daisy Dalrymple and her beloved Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher of Scotland Yard have finally tied the knot. They were even allowed the luxury of a two-week honeymoon without an investigation interfering. Now the Yard has proposed to send Alec to Washington D.C. to help President Hoover straighten out his Federal Bureau of Investigation. To sweeten the deal, the Yard offers to send Daisy along on the cruise, effectively extending their honeymoon, for what can happen aboard a ship?

The newlyweds are aboard the ship with Daisy's lifelong friend, Phillip Petrie, his wife Gloria and his American father-in-law Caleb Arbuckle. At the last minute they are joined by Arbuckle's new acquaintance, Jethro Gotobed, a newlywed himself, and Wanda, his new wife, someone everyone is suspicious of.

Soon they are underway and enjoying their days on the high seas. A strange accident finds a Sussex farmer overboard and near death, leaving Alec and Daisy wondering who might want this man dead. Upon reflections the two think that he mustn't have been the intended target and try to decide who was. Some very rough seas, many bouts of seasickness, an herbalist offering herbs as cures, several romantic dalliances and another body overboard turn Daisy's and Alec's relaxing trip into the thing Alec dreaded the most, another investigation.

To Davey Jones Below is a delightful, light-hearted addition to the Daisy Dalrymple series. Longtime fans will be glad to see the two finally tying the knot, although even newcomers to the series will quickly realize the two will never settle down.

Alec and Daisy remain fresh characters, now with a new facet to explore their interaction as a married couple. Their shipboard friends are a quirky bunch of people, although it is a bit hard at times to sort out some of the men. Carola Dunn deftly includes the storm as a character, even making it responsible for the way some of the action plays out.

The mystery is a confusing one and there are many possible scenarios that could play out. The one that finally emerges continues the light-heartedness of the book. Readers will enjoy this quick trip across the Atlantic with Alec and Daisy and will be left wondering what adventures might await them in America.
