First Lady Melania Trump and son Barron Finally Move into the White House

FLOTUS Melania Trump says so long to the Trump Tower and joins President Trump in the White House.  She spent the first several months of Trump’s presidency in the Trump Tower penthouse in New York City.

“Looking forward to the memories we’ll make in our new home!” She tweeted on June 12th from her official @FLOTUS account with an accompanying photo showing a view of the Washington Monument from a window in the White House.

It is uncommon for the president and first lady to live apart during any time of the presidency, especially in the beginning stages.  The Washington Post referred to the decision as “unprecedented” and described is as flouting “the most basic of all first lady traditions.”

Melania Trump and Barron remained in New York after Trump’s inauguration in January so that the 11-year-old could finish the school year at Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.  Barron will start at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Maryland this coming year.

“My husband is traveling all the time,” Melania said after the election in November when she first announced she would remain in New York. “Barron needs somebody as a parent, so I am with him all the time.”

We haven’t seen too much of Melania since the inauguration but now that she’s living in Washington D.C., she will most likely become more active in her role as the first lady.

“I do think once she’s in D.C. there’ll be more pressure for her to be working on something that’s her own, that’s helping some segment of the population because that’s what first ladies are supposed to do,” says Jean Harris, professor of political science and women’s studies at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania.
