In her eleventh outing, Benni Harper leaves her artist’s coop and the museum she runs and travels to the Broken DIS ranch to help family friend Shawna Abbot turn the working cattle ranch into a successful guest ranch. For the opening weekend, Benni has arranged a quilter’s retreat and her grandmother Dove has booked one of her women’s groups. Benni is certain nothing can go wrong until she finds a skeleton in a makesift grave while on a group horseback ride.
Now Benni finds herself working with Detective Ford Hudson who makes very little secret of his attraction to the young cowgirl. Benni’s husband, Police Chief Gabe Ortiz, is not far behind and takes no time assuring Detective Hudson who has claim on Benni’s heart. Some minor mishaps, a barn fire and an escaped bull make Benni wonder what is going on beneath the surface of the newly opened guest ranch and whether the bones are just a sick trick to scare off the new owners and guests. The rumor of a national travel critic visiting the ranch and Benni’s colorful but lazy cousin add to the new management’s stress, but offer some light-hearted humor to the story.
In Broken Dishes, Benni’s skills and expertise as a horsewoman shine through. While it’s a side of Benni seen before, it is nicely showcased in this outing where her interest in quilting and local history take a back seat. Benni continues to remain an open and likeable character and stays fresh in each new book. Her relationship with Ortiz has grown from a mild flirtation into a fully committed married relationship, something Benni never expected to find again after the death of her husband. Benni’s family members, usually very visible, are not as prominent this time as the guests of the ranch take center stage.
The bones Benni finds have obviously not been part of a living person for a long time and Benni never expects to find a connection with the group that is currently staying at the ranch. An old cemetery and a mysterious grave do offer a bit of genealogical history that Benni is so fond of. Ever charming, ever entertaining, Earlene Fowler offers another delightful entry into a strong series that is sure to win new fans with each new book.
