Joliffe, a player in a traveling medieval troupe of actors, who often appeared in Margaret Frazer’s Dame Frevisse mysteries, is called upon by the bishop of Winchester, Bishop Beaufort, to repay a debt incurred the previous autumn in London. After Christmastide, but before Lent, Joliffe is to travel to France, disguised as John Ripon, a disgraced clerk from Bishop Beaufort’s household, where he is to present himself to the bishop of Therouanne.

Joliffe is unclear what his mission is to be but, ever the faithful servant, he goes and as is his habit, keeps his eyes and ears open throughout his journeys. Once in Rouen, France, which is currently a hotbed of political and religious turmoil, Joliffe is appointed as the secretary to the bishop’s niece, the recently widowed Lady Jacquetta. Joliffe quickly realizes his true mission is to train as a spy under Jacquetta’s former husband’s spymaster, but Joliffe is not sure who has secrets, who knows them and who will kill to protect them.

With the Burgundians and the Normans at odds, France becomes an increasingly dangerous place for Joliffe who is eager to quickly learn what is expected of him, look for an opportunity to complete his task and return to his troupe in England.

Carefully and faithfully rendered, 15th-century England and France and all the political difficulties come easily to life. Enough information is provided about the political climate of the time without giving such detail as to bog down the plot. Historical figures are scattered throughout the pages giving more authenticity to the storyline.

Joliffe is not necessarily thrilled with his new assignment, but as a faithful servant carries it out as best as he can. Readers will have an idea as to who is behind all the treachery, but will ultimately be surprised when all is revealed. Medieval mystery fans will once again enjoy the clever player Joliffe and his adventures.
