Teacher Willi Gallagher is on her way home from an educators’ conference in Austin and even before the unpredicted blizzard hits, she's certain it will be a long trip. Congressman Van Bauer is on the Amtrak train, along with his ex-wife and political opponent BeeBee, and he seems to have a quarrel with everyone. To irritate Willi further, Native American detective Quannah Lassiter, a man who disturbs her personally and professionally, is also on the train.

Now the storm has blocked the tracks and the group of passengers become unlikely roommates in an old motel. When one of them is murdered, they all become suspects and it's up to Willi and Quannah to sort them out and unmask a killer before the snow lets up and a killer escapes forever.

Death Medicine is reminiscent of traditional English manor mysteries with a Native American mystical twist. Willi is very superstitious and when some of her friend Elba's predictions begin to come true and she is certain she is hearing ghosts, she knows it's not her overactive imagination, but someone playing with her mind. Plenty of suspects and motives abound to keep readers entertained and guessing. The characters are very colorful and contrast and complement each other well.

There is a tension between Willi and Quannah over the case and their relationship that provides a break from the investigation and promise for the future. The blizzard casts an almost dreamlike shadow adding to the mysticism of this light-hearted traditional mystery with an American twist.
