As the spring thaw begins, Alaskan musher and kennel owner Jessie Arnold is getting set to train a new generation of sled dogs. Mirroring the unstable and unpredictable weather are the events that begin occurring to and around Jessie. First, the local hangout is destroyed by arson; next, Anne Holman, a woman from Jessie's past appears, begging for Jessie's help in escaping an abusive husband. Finally, Jessie's own log cabin is burned to the ground, an incident that sends her life spinning out of control.

Overzealous fire marshal Mike Tatum investigated a fire over ten years ago that killed two young children and scarred his hands for life. He suspected Anne Holman of setting the fire and seeing her again brings up his rage and suspicions. He becomes suspicious of Jessie, too, accusing her of protecting Anne. More fires are set and Tatum is killed with Jessie's gun. Evidence of her involvement in the fires seems to be mounting and some of her closest friends become concerned. Jessie knows she must act quickly to find the arsonist and save herself from the accusations, or worse, becoming the next victim.

Beneath the Ashes is a briskly paced, absorbing mystery. Sue Henry masterfully describes life in Alaska, with all its unusual attributes. The mystery is very involved and although part of it is relatively easy to solve, there are other parts that are harder to guess until it is all neatly tied together in the end.

Jessie Arnold is a very likable heroine. She is quick thinking and has the survival skills and instincts necessary for grueling dog sled trips, but easily translates these skills in other situations. Although given a small glimpse of her past, readers may be curious to learn more about this self-reliant woman.

This is a fast-paced, quick read that will appeal to readers looking for a strong heroine and those who enjoy the stark reality of the Alaskan landscape.
