Ikea Responds Perfectly to the Balenciaga “copy” Bag


We’ve all used the famous blue bag to lug our newly purchased reasonably-priced home goods home from Ikea.  Well, what if I told you that during that time, you were making a modern fashion statement?  Because Ikea shopping bags are having a big style moment.

 

Balenciaga, one of the biggest fashion labels du jour has released a leather tote as part of their SS17 men’s collection that looks eerily similar to their large blue Frakta bag.  And the internet is riled up about it.  Why? Because the Balenciaga version comes with a $2,145.00 price tag

So how did Ikea react when they saw this striking replica? Surprisingly, flattered.

Ikea released a statement in which they said, “We are deeply flattered that the Balenciaga tote bag resembles the IKEA iconic sustainable blue bag for 99 cents. Nothing beats the versatility of a great big blue bag!”

 

 

Their response went a step further with a tongue in cheek advertisement with the slogan “The Original.”

Other advertisements show how to identify an original from the ‘copy.’  The biggest difference is price, the Ikea bag is only $0.99

 

 

This subsequent advertisement was shot with the same look and feel of the Balenciaga ad and was the brainchild of Swedish agency, Acne’s, creative director Johan Holmgren.

It goes without saying that IKEA isn’t worried about losing sales to Balenciaga.  In fact, they’ve been relishing the free PR, and are clearly capitalizing on the moment.
