Kendall Jenner’s Pepsi Ad Disaster

Kendall Jenner’s involvement in a big Pepsi commercial probably wasn’t meant to become a controversial issue, but people across the internet are divided over it anyway, and many are perhaps unfairly placing the blame on her.

What are they blaming her for? Apparently, the ad is being described as tone-deaf, because it portrays a group of protesters interacting with a line of police officers, but they’re all being depicted in a very positive and happy light.

Some say that this doesn’t reflect the reality of the social and political situation in America today. If they are so happy, why are they protesting?

Other commentators are actually annoyed at the attractiveness of the actors in the commercial. Kendall Jenner herself is seen participating in a model photo shoot during the commercial, before she joins the passing protest march when invited wordlessly by a young male musician. The musician, a Muslim woman photographer, and many other people seen in the commercial look especially attractive, perhaps unrealistically so.

In the commercial, as she joins the march, Kendall changes out of her blonde wig, wipes away her lipstick, and appears to switch from her silver designer dress into a more casual blue denim ensemble in the blink of an eye.

She joins the protest, and grabbing a cold can of Pepsi as she goes, makes her way up to the front line, where the march has been stopped by a line of cops.

Kendall steps out in front of the pretty marchers and hands the can of soda to one of the cops, who pops it open and has a drink, much to the delight of the whole protest march. The photographer captures the moment, and all eyes are again focused on Kendall, who somehow saved the day by sharing a Pepsi.


The question on everyone’s mind is, what does this commercial even mean?

Is Pepsi trying to make a statement? Most commentators agree that if they were, it wasn’t really clear. Is the commercial just a way for Kendall Jenner to get some more attention? If that was the case, it definitely worked, just not in the way anyone had hoped. Kendall wasn’t involved in designing the commercial, but she was hired for it, and her getting attention is definitely an important hidden theme in the advertisement’s imagery.

Kendall (and everyone else) certainly looked good in the commercial, but it all came off as kind of silly and fake in the context of the real world of America.
