Kate Conway is a freelance producer of true crime television shows. She is currently producing a segment for a show about crimes that have been solved when her soon to be ex-husband Frank drops dead at the age of 37 of an apparent heart attack. In the emergency room she meets Vera, the woman Frank left her for. Kate is shocked to learn that Vera is not a young, beautiful woman, but might even be a few years older than Kate and Kate may actually like Vera.

Now Kate, reeling from the impending divorce, is thrust into the role of widow and murder suspect when Frank’s death is labeled suspicious. Being a “person of interest” and at her mother-in-law’s request, Kate uses some of her investigative skills to begin looking into Frank’s death. At the same time, she is filming a segment for a new show, Missing Persons, following the life of a young nurse, Theresa Moretti, who disappeared a year ago. A break in at Kate’s home and a dead bird on her front stoop convinces her she has hit a nerve with someone, but with whom and on which case?

Kate Conway is a very interesting character who goes through some major life changes very quickly and gracefully. Kate is very adept at acknowledging her emotions, addressing with them, dealing with them and then moving on. All the characters are interesting and well-developed, some into suspects for one murder or the other. Kate’s occupation allows her to investigate two murders that are otherwise unconnected.

Both storylines are well-plotted and while there are numerous suspects for both murders, one is easier to solve than the other. After all is said and done, Kate lands squarely on both feet. An admirable new heroine and a well-written mystery from the author of the “Someday Quilt Mysteries” is sure to win Clare O’Donohue some new fans.
