Scumble River school psychologist Skye Dennison has finally made up her mind and has accepted Police Chief Wally Boyd's proposal of marriage, though undertaker Simon Reid is not giving Skye up without a fight.

Skye is thrilled to hear that a new bookstore with a cafe is opening in Scumble River. She is an avid reader and no slouch when it comes to sweets, and considers this the perfect pairing. Before the new store even opens, the owner Risa rubs a few of the locals the wrong way, including several of Skye's relatives: her cousin (and mayor's son) the used car dealer across the street, the insurance salesman, and Skye's godfather who owns the trailer park where Risa and her husband are staying.

The morning after the grand opening, the body of Risa's young employee, Kayla, is found under a heavy bookcase, her head bashed in. At first, Skye and Wally believe that Risa was the intended victim. Skye, with Wally's blessing, begins, with her fingers crossed, asking her relatives for their alibis. When everyone is checked out the newly engaged couple begins thinking that maybe Kayla was the intended victim. But they can't figure out why anyone would want to murder this young woman who was, by all accounts, much loved.

As always, Skye Dennison and Scumble River provide a reliable, enjoyable mystery. Reading about Scumble River is as comfortable as being in your own hometown. Skye's quirky assortment of relatives never fail to disappoint - her brother Vince, especially this time, as he informs Skye of his intentions to elope even though they both know that will throw their mother into a state of apoplexy.

Simon continues to try and woo Skye back but she is resistant even though Wally is divorced, and to be married in her beloved Catholic Church, Wally must seek an annulment from a woman he lost touch with several years ago. A fun and fast-paced mystery, Denise Swanson never disappoints.
