The organizer confirmed that Sweden will host their first-ever female-only rock festival next summer due to several sexual assault reports at other festivals in the country.
According to several announcements, Sweden’s largest festival, Bravalla, will not be going on next year because the police received reports of 23 sexual assaults and 4 rapes at this year’s event.
When she heard this news, Emma Knyckare, Swedish radio presenter and comedian tweeted: “What do you think about putting together a really cool festival where only non-men are welcome, that we’ll run until ALL men have learned how to behave themselves?”
She received a lot of support for the idea, and actually confirmed it later on Instagram: “Sweden’s first man-free rock festival will see the light next summer.”
“In the coming days I’ll bring together a solid group of talented organisers and project leaders to form the festival organisers, then you’ll hear from everyone again when it’s time to move forward.”
The pattern of sexual abuse at festivals has become a worldwide problem, and 28 British festivals are doing something about it, they staged an online “blackout” in May to show support for the #saferspacefestivals campaign.
